Beach reads

Ocean waves in the background, the sand underneath your toes, and an engrossing book in your hands—this is the scene that the term "beach read" usually conjures. Whether you are literally reading on the beach or not, a beach read can be a perfect escape. There is some disagreement over what truly defines a beach read—some say it's a light, enjoyable read (usually with a happy ending), while others will say that it's any book that provides an absorbing, immersive experience. 

Below are selection of mostly Young Adult novels that could be called a "beach read." Because so many books could potentially fall into this category, we split the list into further genres: there is a selection of humor, historical fiction, sports, and romance novels. This list combines texts culled from NPR's recommended list, Goodreads lists, and some of the favorite texts of SHS English teachers.
