Why a Community Read? The goals are to …

  • Build community through a common experience.

  • Engage in cross-grade and student to staff dialogue on important topics and issues.

  • Use the text to identify topics for the school year that can be woven into other experiences.
  • Foster a community of readers.

In September, we will meet in groups that are a mix of 9th, 10th, 11th & 12th grade students and 1-2 teachers or staff members. Groups will participate in community building activities inspired by Angie Thomas's book.

She is an inaugural winner of the Walter Dean Myers Grant 2015, awarded by We Need Diverse Books. • NCTE.org: "Angie Thomas Discusses On the Come Up"

    • "In The Hate U Give, I told teenagers, “You have a voice. It’s important. Use it.” But I would be doing them a huge disservice if I didn’t address the fact that so often when they do speak up and speak out, they’re criticized for how they speak, they’re policed on how they speak. Or they’re told that they’re too much this and they’re too little that. And [Bri] is a young lady who experiences those things. So for me, On the Come Up is telling them . . .  “Make some noise. Even when it makes people uncomfortable. Even when it challenges the status quo. Make some noise.” And that’s what this book is about."
